Aya Maqat: A Child Who Lost Her Left Eye in an Israeli Strike, Now Struggling to Survive in a Displacement Tent Gaza — Amid the pain of injury and the harsh realities of displacement, young Aya Maqat is facing extraordinarily difficult circumstances after losing her left eye completely when she was struck by an Israeli attack while standing at the entrance of her home. Aya’s suffering did not end with the loss of her eye. She and her family now live in a displacement tent beside their home, which was destroyed by the bombardment. Their situation reflects the devastating hardships faced by children across the Gaza Strip. Aya urgently needs an artificial eye to help restore her appearance and ease some of the lasting effects of her injury. However, her family’s dire living conditions have made meeting her medical needs an additional challenge, as they struggle to cope with the loss of their home and the absence of a stable life. Despite her injuries, Aya tries to help her family and ease their burden, confronting circumstances no child should ever have to endure. She continues to live with the physical and emotional consequences of her injury while facing the harsh realities of displacement and the lack of basic necessities. Aya’s story is more than the story of a child who lost an eye. It is the story of a childhood wounded by war, and a family struggling to hold on to life amid the rubble and displacement tents. Providing Aya with an artificial eye and appropriate medical care remains an urgent humanitarian priority. Her family also needs support to help them endure their difficult circumstances and regain some measure of safety and stability. Aya needs a helping hand to access the care she urgently requires and continue her life with dignity, despite everything she has lost.
